Prije trideset godina izvanzemaljci su uspostavili kontakt sa Zemljom. Ljudska je rasa očekivala bespoštedni napad ili enormni tehnološki napredak. Ništa se od toga nije dogodilo. Ustvari, izvanzemaljci su bili izbjeglice, posljednji preživjeli sa svoje planete. Bića su smještena u District 9 Južne Afrike jer se zemlje svijeta nisu mogle dogovoriti što će s njima. Izvanzemaljci su postali problem i svi pomalo gube živce.
Za izvanzemaljce je zadužena privatna kompanija MNU kojoj je u cilju samo jedno – osposobiti moćno oružje došljaka kako bi na njemu zaradili. Jedan od njihovih agenta, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), izložen je nepoznatoj vanzemaljskoj supstanci zbog čega postaje najtraženiji čovjek na Zemlji. Postoji samo jedno mjesto gdje se može sakriti – Okrug 9.

In 1982, a massive star ship bearing a bedraggled alien population, nicknamed "The Prawns," appeared over Johannesburg, South Africa. Twenty-eight years later, the initial welcome by the human population has faded. The refugee camp where the aliens were located has deteriorated into a militarized ghetto called District 9, where they are confined and exploited in squalor. In 2010, the munitions corporation, Multi-National United, is contracted to forcibly evict the population with operative Wikus van der Merwe in charge. In this operation, Wikus is exposed to a strange alien chemical and must rely on the help of his only two new 'Prawn' friends.

In these bare-knuckle battles, Shawn has a chance to win significant money--and also the heart of the beautiful Zulay (Zulay Henao). A film that goes beyond its deceptively simple title and premise, FIGHTING is elevated by the keen eye of Montiel, who also co-wrote the script with Robert Munic, and the charismatic presence of Tatum, who previously had a minor role in the writer-director’s cinematic debut, A GUIDE TO RECOGNIZING YOUR SAINTS. Although the film goes through the standard up-by-the-bootstraps dramatic cycle, the performances of Tatum, Howard, and Henao make the story surprisingly compelling, and the fight sequences are exceptionally fierce, giving the movie considerable added zest. Though less high-profile than combat classics such as ROCKY and THE KARATE KID, FIGHTING fits well into the category of revered movies of the boxing/martial-arts subgenre.
